Rev. Dr. Ethel Canty Bothuel [b-THELL] licensed to preach in 2008 and ordained to the Gospel ministry in June 2012 by the First Baptist Church of Vienna, Virginia, where she serves as an associate minister. Dr. Bothuel is worshiper, teacher, preacher, writer, musician, servant leader, consultant, sinner saved by grace, and humbled to be set apart for God’s work. Her service in the church includes active participation in Christian education, women’s ministry, weekly Bible study, preaching, strategic planning and more. She is passionate about the work of the Lord being done in a way that glorifies God, shows compassion for God’s people, and that unifies the church.
She is certified by the Society of Church Consulting to assist churches in strategically planning for their future. She is the author of a book written especially for those seeking to pursue and progress in the vocation of ministry entitled, Preparing a Plain Path: Nurturing New Son and Daughter Ministers on their Christian Journey (released in June 2012). She has written many articles and devotionals, and blogs on matters of faith. Her previous work in higher education as program director, in non-profit organizations as executive director, and as vice president and director of human resources has enabled her to lead and participate in work impacting the workforce, to design and present training, to serve as hearing officer in mediating grievances, and more.
Dr. Bothuel has served as one of two commissioners of Worship for the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, as instructor in the Christian Education Division of the Northern Virginia Baptist Association, as co-director of the Association’s Worship Arts Ministry, instructor in the Evans-Smith Institute of Vienna and Vicinity under the auspices of Virginia Union University as the Ministerial Enrichment Lecturer for the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Northern Virginia.
Rev. Bothuel has an earned Doctorate in Ministry with emphasis on Church Leadership and a Masters degree in Theological Studies from Wesley Seminary. Her undergraduate degree in Sociology is from Howard University in Washington D.C. She has received training in the use of the Enneagram—a personality type test. She also has participated in training at conferences and conventions as attendee and instructor.
Dr. Bothuel loves the Lord and uses her gifts to help others see God’s awesome power and glory. Her firm belief is that God “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we can ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” (Eph. 3:20 KJV)
